Our Community
Welcome to Ellsworth, Kansas!
Ellsworth is a welcoming community of nearly 3,000 residents in Ellsworth County. Known for its strong schools, three beautiful parks, golf course, airport, swimming pool, and excellent hunting and fishing, Ellsworth blends small-town charm with forward-thinking growth and development. As the county seat, Ellsworth is located seven miles south of I-70 and is served by Kansas Highways 14, 140, and 156.
The city, county, and Fort Harker (originally Fort Ellsworth) were named for Lt. Allen Ellsworth. The fort was established in 1864 and helped spark early growth in the area. When the Kansas Pacific Railroad announced plans for a western terminal nearby, settlers and businesspeople arrived seeking opportunity. Cattle drives along the Ellsworth Trail also played a major role in the city’s early success.
Ellsworth was officially established on May 8, 1867. After severe flooding forced the town to relocate upstream to its present site, it continued to grow into the thriving community it is today—a great place to raise a family and call home.
